Analysis of Act 3 Scene 5 in Romeo and Juliet Essay
Analysis of Act 3 Scene 5 in Romeo and Juliet In this scene we see Juliet loose the closeness of all the people she loves: first Romeo who has departed after spending the wedding night with her; secondly by her father who viciously turns on her when she refuses to marry Paris; thirdly by her mother who declares ââ¬ËI have done with theeââ¬â¢ when Juliet begs her for help in delaying the proposed marriage to Paris; and lastly by the Nurse whom she tearfully turns to as a last resort for advice and help. Furthermore, we see, for the first time in the play, Juliet disobey her parents, and develop into a mature young lady capable of making her own decisions. After having spent the night with her newâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Julietââ¬â¢s reaction is now totally different to the young obedient girl we saw at the start of the play. For the first time she disobeys her mother: ââ¬ËHe shall not make me there a Joyful bride!ââ¬â¢ The audience can now see that Juliet is growing in maturity by the skilful way she handles her mother. Also we see that Julietââ¬â¢s situation is worsening. When Lord Capulet enters he comments on Julietââ¬â¢s tears by metaphorically describing her as a tempest-tossed ship: ââ¬ËThy counterfeitââ¬â¢s a bark, a sea, a windâ⬠¦the winds thy sighs.ââ¬â¢ At first, he becomes a little annoyed at Julietââ¬â¢s refusal, but his annoyance soon turns to rage when he realises she s adamant. His words ââ¬Ëget thee to church oââ¬â¢ Thursday/Or never after look me in the faceââ¬â¢ are ironic as she never will look him in the face again when she doesnââ¬â¢t go to church with Paris. He insults her and threatens her with violence: ââ¬Ëdisobedient wretch! My fingers itchâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢; until finally, his anger, increased by Lady Capuletââ¬â¢s and the Nurseââ¬â¢s pleas, reaches fever pitch. He threatens to disown Juliet if she refuses Paris; ââ¬Ëhang, beg, starve, die in the streets,/For, by my soul Iââ¬â¢ll neââ¬â¢er acknowledge thee,ââ¬â¢ before he finally storms out. Tearfully distraught, Juliet begs her mother to: ââ¬Ëdelay this marriage for a month, a weekâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢, but Lady Capulet remains unmoved, declaring: ââ¬ËI have done with thee.ââ¬â¢Show MoreRelated Analysis of Act Three Scene Five of William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet1540 Words à |à 7 PagesAnalysis of Act Three Scene Five of William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet is a dramatic tragedy, and was first performed in 1595.
